Connecting Communities: Lee County's New Trail Project Bridges Gaps Between Fort Myers Beach and Bonita Beach
In an exciting development for residents and visitors alike, Lee County Commissioners have given the green light to a transformative project that promises to enhance connectivity and promote outdoor recreation. On Tuesday, June 11th, 2024 an agreement was approved with the Florida Department of Transportation to design and build a 12-foot-wide, 3.25-mile-long mixed-use trail. This trail will serve as a vital link connecting Fort Myers Beach with Bonita Beach, spanning from Big Carlos Pass all the way to Hickory Island. Design for this project is proposed to begin in late 2024.
Bridging Gaps, Connecting Communities
The significance of this trail project cannot be overstated. By providing a dedicated pathway for pedestrians, cyclists, and outdoor enthusiasts, it will offer a safe and scenic route for travel between two popular beach destinations. This initiative not only promotes healthier and more sustainable modes of transportation but also fosters a sense of community by bringing residents and visitors closer together.
Funding for this trail project is expected to come from State Funding administered through the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT). This funding is generated from State vehicle tag sales, demonstrating a commitment to investing in infrastructure projects that promote connectivity, recreation, and community well-being.
